Canva turned design into something anyone on a team can do in a browser: pick a template, drop in a photo, change the words and share a link. cinemaOS is a Mac film studio whose Atelier workspace makes posters, covers and social graphics from your own footage and stills, next to the edit. Both can produce a festival poster and a set of social sizes. They get there in very different ways, and each is the better choice for a different team.

Who each one is best for

Canva suits teams that need lots of good-looking graphics quickly: marketing staff, schools, small businesses and creators who want templates, shared folders, comments and approvals, on any computer or phone.

cinemaOS suits filmmakers and small studios whose graphics come from the film itself: a key frame, the film's typeface, its grade and a brand kit applied to every poster size, all updated from one project when the title or credits change. cinemaOS is version 0.2, build 9, for Apple silicon Macs.

Where Canva is the better choice

cinemaOS has no real-time collaboration in the browser. If shared editing is the core of your workflow, Canva fits better.

Where cinemaOS fits

A film release has a specific design problem. The poster should look like the movie, not like a template. It needs the film's frame, grade and type, and it has to exist in many sizes that all change when the title, laurels or credits change. In Atelier you set a brand kit and lay out a poster from a film still, then adapt one design to three formats and export the set. Because the source frames sit in the same project as the edit, a regrade or a new cut is one step away from the artwork.

The Journal covers Canva alternatives for film posters and a brand kit for every aspect ratio in more depth.

Moving work across

There is no Canva import. Export images or PDFs from Canva and place them in an Atelier layout if you want to keep working with them. From cinemaOS, export images or PDF snapshots and upload them to Canva when a wider team needs to reuse them.

FAQ

Does cinemaOS have templates like Canva?

It has a design library of styles and packs in Create, and brand kits for your own identity, but not a template marketplace of Canva's size.

Can several people edit a cinemaOS design at once?

No. Projects are local files on your Mac. Teams can share files, but there is no live co-editing in a browser.

Can cinemaOS export every social size at once?

Yes. Set a brand kit in Atelier and use Export All Aspects, or adapt pages to 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5 and export the set.
