Lightroom is built for photographers: import, organise, keyword and develop thousands of images, then sync them across devices. cinemaOS is a film studio that happens to include a photo room. The overlap is real but narrow: stills from a set, frames pulled from the cut, portraits for a press kit and key art. For those jobs, cinemaOS keeps the photos next to the film they belong to. For a photo archive, Lightroom is the better tool, and this page says so plainly.
Who each one is best for
Lightroom suits photographers of every kind: cataloguing a career's worth of images, developing raw files with a consistent look, masking, presets, and editing on desktop, phone and web. Adobe offers it in two forms, the cloud-based Lightroom and the desktop Lightroom Classic.
cinemaOS suits filmmakers, small studios and creators whose stills are part of a release. A behind-the-scenes set that should look like the film, a festival press kit, a poster built from a frame: Atelier develops those images in the same project as the edit and grade. cinemaOS is version 0.2, build 9, for Apple silicon Macs.
Side by side
Editing
- cinemaOS
- A full video editor in the Sequencer, so stills and the film share one project, one grade reference and one brand kit.
- Lightroom
- Photo only, apart from basic video trimming in some versions.
Color
- cinemaOS
- Atelier Photo applies Levels, looks such as a 35mm Release Print with Physical Grain and Diffusion, and syncs the look and layers to other stills. Finisher's Shot Match can match footage to a reference still.
- Lightroom
- Deep raw development: tone, color mixing, color grading wheels, profiles, presets and lens corrections.
Sound
- cinemaOS
- The SOUND console and Spatial Theatrics for the film itself.
- Lightroom
- None. It is a photo application.
Design and photo
- cinemaOS
- Develop a still, paint soft light on its own layer, build an editable cover with text and image layers, then lay out posters and adapt them to every size with a brand kit.
- Lightroom
- Developing and organising, with design work usually moving to Photoshop or a layout app.
AI
- cinemaOS
- J.A.R.E.D. runs on your Mac with no generative credits.
- Lightroom
- AI masking for subjects and skies, denoise, and generative removal that can draw on Adobe generative credits. Check Adobe's current details.
Price model
- cinemaOS
- $9.99 USD a month excluding VAT, after a 60-day free trial with no card and no automatic charge. Teams are $8.99 per seat a month for 2 to 50 seats.
- Lightroom
- Part of Adobe's photography and Creative Cloud subscriptions. Check Adobe's current pricing.
Platform
- cinemaOS
- Mac-native on Apple silicon. Windows is planned for November 2027.

- Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android and web, depending on the version.
Interchange
- cinemaOS
- Imports XML and EDL cuts for the film and exports stills, for example as Web JPEG.
- Lightroom
- Standard photo formats, presets, and catalogs or cloud libraries that stay in Adobe's system.
Where Lightroom is the better choice
- You need a catalog with keywords, ratings, collections and search across years of photos.
- Raw development with lens profiles and presets is the core of your work.
- You edit on a phone or tablet as well as a computer.
- You deliver large weddings, events or commercial shoots on a deadline.
- You do not make video, or video is a small side of your work.
cinemaOS does not try to be a catalog for a whole photo archive. If that is the job, Lightroom is the right tool.
Where cinemaOS fits
The strength of cinemaOS is that stills sit next to the film. You can develop a set photo, compare Original, Split and After while you shape the tones, then build a film finish and sync it to the rest of the set so the press kit looks like the movie. The same stills can go straight into an Atelier poster with your brand kit and out to every aspect ratio. Our Lightroom alternative guide looks at other options for filmmakers too.
Moving work across
There is no catalog import. Export the photos you need from Lightroom as full-resolution files and bring them into cinemaOS. Keep your Lightroom catalog as the archive, and use cinemaOS for the stills that ship with a film.
FAQ
Can cinemaOS replace Lightroom?
For a photo library, no. cinemaOS develops and designs with stills that belong to a film project, but it is not built as a catalog for thousands of images.
Can I give stills the same look as my film?
Yes. Apply a look in Atelier Photo, sync it to the other stills, and use Shot Match in Finisher when footage has to match a reference still.
Does cinemaOS have a mobile app?
No. It is a Mac app for Apple silicon, with Windows planned for November 2027.
