This comparison is different from the others, because After Effects and cinemaOS do not do the same job. After Effects is a layer-based compositing and motion graphics application. cinemaOS is an editing, finishing and release studio that includes live titles and keyframed video composition. If you came here asking whether cinemaOS replaces After Effects, the short answer is no. The useful question is how much of your motion work actually needs it.
Who each one is best for
After Effects suits motion designers, compositors and VFX artists: complex animation, expressions, tracking and rotoscoping, 3D layers, particle work and a deep plug-in market. If motion is your craft, it remains the standard tool and a skill clients will ask for.
cinemaOS suits editors and filmmakers whose motion needs are release-sized: lower thirds, title cards, a credit move, a social version of the poster that drifts into place. Those can live in the same project as the edit, stay editable when the cut changes and never need a render round trip. cinemaOS is version 0.2, build 9 on Apple silicon Macs.
Side by side
Editing
- cinemaOS
- A full editor: the Sequencer with multitrack picture and sound, trim tools, transitions, adjustment layers, live titles and edit by text.
- After Effects
- Not an editor. Compositions are built shot by shot; cutting a film happens in Premiere Pro or another editor.
Color
- cinemaOS
- Finisher's Color Engine, Shot Match from a reference still and LUT Lab.
- After Effects
- Color correction effects and Lumetri inside compositions, mostly used per shot rather than across a film.
Sound
- cinemaOS
- The SOUND console with dialogue, music, effects and ambience buses and loudness, plus Spatial Theatrics for object placement on stereo and headphones.
- After Effects
- Basic audio playback and levels for timing animation. Mixing happens elsewhere.
Design and photo
- cinemaOS
- Atelier lays out posters, develops stills, paints light on layers and animates designs with Position keyframes, easing and layer stagger, then exports an H.264 MP4. Brand kits go to every poster size.
- After Effects
- Deep motion design: shape layers, expressions, 3D cameras and lights, tracking, rotoscoping and an enormous effects and plug-in library.
AI
- cinemaOS
- J.A.R.E.D. runs on your Mac, with no generative credits.
- After Effects
- Tools such as Roto Brush, plus generative features across Adobe apps that can use generative credits. Check Adobe's current plan details.
Price model
- cinemaOS
- $9.99 USD a month excluding VAT, after a 60-day free trial with no card and no automatic charge. Teams: $8.99 per seat a month, 2 to 50 seats.
- After Effects
- A Creative Cloud subscription, alone or in a larger plan. Check Adobe's current pricing.
Platform
- cinemaOS
- Mac-native on Apple silicon; Windows planned for November 2027.
- After Effects
- Mac and Windows.
Interchange
- cinemaOS
- Imports XML and EDL cuts and hands them back as XML or EDL. Titles stay live inside the project.
- After Effects
- Dynamic Link with Premiere Pro, project files, and rendered files for any other editor.
Where After Effects is the better choice
- Motion design is your job, not a step in someone else's edit.
- You need compositing, keying, tracking, rotoscoping or 3D camera work.
- You rely on expressions, templates or plug-ins built for After Effects.
- You deliver motion graphics templates to editors who use Premiere.
- A studio or client needs After Effects project files.
In all of these cases, keep After Effects. cinemaOS does not try to compete there.
Where cinemaOS saves you the trip
A lot of everyday motion is simpler than it looks. A lower third that names a speaker. An opening title that eases into place. A poster that becomes a six-second animated version for social. In cinemaOS, live titles are added in the edit and stay editable as the cut changes, and Atelier's Video Composition room lets you animate a title with two keyframes, ease its arrival and stagger layers by half a second.
Because these never leave the project, a late picture change does not orphan a rendered title. Our article on animated titles without After Effects shows where that approach works and where it stops.
Moving work across
There is no After Effects project import in cinemaOS. For finished After Effects shots, render them to a video file and place them in the cinemaOS timeline like any other clip. For an edit that started in Premiere with After Effects compositions, export the sequence as XML from Premiere, import it with Import a cut and replace the dynamic-linked shots with their renders.
FAQ
Can cinemaOS replace After Effects?
No. cinemaOS is not a full After Effects replacement. It handles editable titles and simple keyframed motion for releases; compositing and complex motion design belong in After Effects.
Can I animate titles in cinemaOS?
Yes. Titles stay live in the Sequencer, and Atelier's Video Composition room animates Position with keyframes, easing and layer stagger, then exports an H.264 MP4.
Does cinemaOS open After Effects projects?
No. Render After Effects work to a video file and bring that into the cinemaOS timeline.
