CapCut made editing quick and approachable for millions of people: templates, trending effects, automatic captions and one-tap export to social platforms, on a phone, in a browser or on a desktop. cinemaOS is a Mac-native studio aimed at people who want more control over the picture, the sound and where their files live. The two overlap on short-form video, captions and vertical formats, and differ on almost everything else. Here is a fair comparison.
Who each one is best for
CapCut suits creators who publish often, work from templates and trends, edit on their phone as much as on a computer, and want results in minutes. It is easy to learn and has a free tier, with more features in paid plans.
cinemaOS suits creators who have started to care about the details: a consistent grade across a series, clean dialogue against music, captions in two languages, a 9:16 version that follows the subject, and a thumbnail or poster made from the same footage. Everything stays in a local project on your Mac. cinemaOS is version 0.2, build 9, for Apple silicon.

Where CapCut is the better choice
- You edit on your phone, or switch between phone and computer during a day.
- Templates and trending effects are a big part of your style.
- You need to publish within minutes of shooting.
- You do not have an Apple silicon Mac.
- You are starting out and want the gentlest learning curve.
What changes when you move to cinemaOS
The main change is control. You grade a series once and match the rest with Shot Match. You set dialogue, music and ambience on their own buses and check loudness before upload. You reframe a 16:9 cut to 9:16 with Track Main Subject proposing the camera move, then adjust it yourself. You generate captions and translate them with Wi-Fi off and export SRT or burn them in. And because projects are local .mntm files with recovery and snapshots, your work does not depend on a cloud account.
The cost of that control is a learning curve and a Mac-only app. Our guide to CapCut alternatives for Mac covers other options too.
Moving a project across
There is no direct CapCut project import. The practical route is to export your source clips and music, or a finished master, and start the cut in cinemaOS. If you work with an editor who sends you a timeline, they can export XML or EDL from their editor and you can bring it in with Import a cut.
FAQ
Does cinemaOS have templates like CapCut?
Not in the same way. cinemaOS has live titles, a design library in Create and brand kits, but it is not built around trend templates.
Can cinemaOS make auto captions?
Yes. It transcribes speech on your Mac, lets you correct the text, translates captions offline and exports SRT or burns them into the picture.
Is there a cinemaOS phone app?
No. cinemaOS is a Mac app for Apple silicon. Windows is planned for November 2027.
